That Jaguar's XJS will become a 'bona fide' classic is beyond doubt. Launched in 1975, its twenty one year production life was a testimony to the excellence of its basic design. With all round independent, coil sprung suspension, power assisted rack and pinion steering and disc brakes its excellent ride / handling balance was justly praised by the contemporary motoring press. Indeed some of its underpinnings are still to be found in both the Aston Martin DB7 and Jaguar's own XK8. The XJS's superlative 5.3 litre developed some 295bhp in later fuel injected form and when allied to automatic transmission gave authoritative 150mph performance.
An original factory V12 Cabriolet, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in either good (interior), very good (engine, transmission, chassis) or excellent (bodywork, paintwork) overall condition. In the current (fifth) ownership for the last eight years, it has been maintained by both marque specialist Derek Watson and more recently Classic Cats of Warrington. With invoices from the former adding up to over £20,000 (total expenditure since 1997 is put at £27,000 plus), its extensive history file also includes service records dating back to 1989 (at 27,866 miles) and MOT certificates from 1991 onwards. Used we are informed for "long distance roof off, sun on your face, wind in your hair motoring" in the South of France, it is believed to have covered some 123,500 miles from new. Retaining its factory supplied tonneau cover and steering wheel (though the latter is not presently fitted), this pampered 'big cat' was treated to a new rear hood section and recovered targa panels in 2003.
