Synonymous with the swinging '60s, the MKII has, at least until very recently, been Jaguar's most widely admired saloon. Featuring notably slimmer roof pillars than its MKI forebear, the newcomer was as airy on the inside as it was elegant on the outside. Comprising a monocoque bodyshell equipped with independent coil-sprung front suspension, a well located live rear axle and disc brakes all round, it could be specified with a 2.4, 3.4 or 3.8-litre version of Jaguar's race-proven XK DOHC engine. The interior was quintessentially British with its sumptuous leather-covered seats, polished wood fascia and door cappings, comprehensive instrumentation and impressive row of auxiliary toggle switches. The attention to detail and build quality of the MKII were remarkable for the price - these cars punched above their weight. Launched in 1959, the model was discontinued in September 1967 and superseded by the 240 and 340 - interim models primarily designed to bridge the gap to the launch of the XJ6 a year later. In fact, while the 340 was dropped on the appearance of the XJ6, the 240 was manufactured alongside it for a further six months or so. The MKII 3.4 and 340 are readily distinguished by the latter's slimmer bumpers, and circular front vents where fog lights would previously have been housed. The interior was now trimmed in 'Ambla' rather than leather. A total of 91,222 MKIIs, 240s and 340s are understood to have been produced. Some 31,454 of these were equipped with the 3.4-litre engine, which was capable of powering the sturdy Saloon to 60 mph in around 11.5 seconds and on to a top speed of over 120 mph.
The right-hand drive 340 on offer left the factory in 1968 and sports Old English White coachwork paired with a Biscuit coloured interior. It is equipped with a manual gearbox plus optional overdrive. The vendor purchased 'EUR 810G' from a Bonhams sale but has apparently only covered some 1,200 miles in it during the last two years. The Jaguar is now being sold complete with a new stainless steel exhaust system and fresh MOT certificate. The vendor currently regards the bodywork, paintwork, trim, engine and gearbox as being in "good" order.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
