The Valiant made its public debut at the 1956 Earls Court Show, with production examples becoming available during 1957. Although the new machine shared its horizontally opposed engine configuration with the more prosaic LE, much of the Valiant's engine was new. The engine relied on air cooling and was equipped with over head valves fed by two Amal carburettors resulting in a significant improvement in performance. The gearbox and clutch were carried over from the LE as were the front fork, wheels and brakes, however, the frame was a duplex full cradle with swinging arm rear suspension, the fork being cast in alloy and containing the final drive shaft. A pair of Woodhead Monroe shock absorbers controlled the rear end. A two piece cowling covered the engine and gearbox and provided a mounting point for the horn which was fitted above the generator cover at the front of the engine. A combined tool and battery box was fitted to the right hand side and could be complimented by a second, optional toolbox on the left. Finished in either black or willow green, the Valiant was advertised as the "New quality lightweight", an accurate description of a machine that was beautifully built but expensive to buy. Road tests at the time praised the new models excellent handling, good performance, which placed it at the forefront of its class with 60 mph cruising being viable and a maximum speed approaching 70 mph, and high quality. Unfortunately for Velocette, the machines high price in a particularly cost sensitive part of the market restricted sales.
This example has been in the same ownership for a number of years and is described by the vendor as being in excellent condition mechanically, with very good paint and brightwork, excellent electrics and transmission. It is offered with a Swansea V5C, an MOT valid until the 12th October 2012 and a road fund licence valid to the end of October 2012.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
