Introduced in December 1981, the Biturbo was Maserati's first 'mass production' design. Instigated by the marque's then owner, Alejandro De Tomaso, it utilized a monocoque chassis equipped with McPherson-strut front and trailing-arm rear suspension, power-assisted rack and pinion steering, a limited slip differential and disc brakes. Powered by a reworked version of the Italian market Merak 2-litre V6 engine featuring three-valves per cylinder (two inlet, one exhaust) and twin turbochargers (one per bank), the initial launch model was capable of an impressive 135mph. However, as the range grew to encompass four-door and Spyder variants (the latter styled by Zagato) so the installation of larger 2.5 litre and 2.8 litre powerplants brought even greater performance.
Finished in Dark Blue with Cream upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (bodywork, paintwork), "very good" (electrical equipment), "excellent" (engine, five-speed manual gearbox) or "fair" (interior trim, hood) condition. Said to have had just "two previous owners" and to possess "a huge history file" with "much work done at Bill McGrath Ltd", the Maserati is further understood to have recently benefited from "a complete brake system overhaul, new fusebox, waxoyling and fresh rear tyres". Riding on correct-type alloy wheels, this tempting Spyder is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until August 2013 and current road fund licence.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
