A golden era in automotive design, the mid-to-late 1950s saw America’s Big Three vying to outdo each other when it came to extreme styling. The ‘Forward Look’ aesthetic pioneered by Chrysler’s Virgil Exner saw him crowned the unofficial ‘King of the Tailfin’. Refined in the University of Michigan’s wind tunnel, one of its most extreme interpretations was found on the 1958 Dodge Royal.
Finished in Blue over White with Two-Tone Blue cloth upholstery, this fabulously over the top Dodge Royal Lancer is described by the vendor as being in ‘very good’ (bodywork, paintwork, interior trim) or ‘excellent’ (V8 engine, electrical equipment, automatic transmission) condition. Reportedly part of a Chrysler collection for thirty years, it is further understood to have been treated to much restoration work in 2016-2017 including engine and automatic gearbox overhauls plus a new exhaust, interior and brakes. Rating the Coupe as ‘a very powerful driver with a clean undercarriage that seemingly needs nothing to be enjoyed’, the seller also notes the five-seater has ‘good chrome and two small dents to the rear bumper’. Resident in the dry state of Arizona until earlier this year, the Dodge has had duties paid into Europe and will be NOVA declared upon sale.
