The Alfa Romeo 1900 first saw the light of day at the 1950 Paris Motor Show and was a replacement for the 6C 2500. It was penned by Orazio Satta and was the first Alfa to be built entirely on a production line and the first to lack a separate chassis. There was the option of a four-door Saloon, and two-door Coupe or Spider. The family was powered by a typically gutsy four-cylinder 'twin cam' engine of 1884cc capacity that produced 90bhp. The unit was mated to a manual four-speed gearbox. Braking was by drums all round. Suspension was independent by wishbones and coil springs at the front and by a live axle at the rear. Alfa's advertising tag line for the 1900 was 'The family car that wins races' - a less than subtle reference to the car's success in the Targa Florio, Stella Alpina and other competition events. A variety of more powerful versions were offered during the model's ten-year lifespan, not least the 1900 SS (Super Sprint) that featured a 115bhp 1975cc engine mated to a five-speed gearbox - the output was sufficient to raise the top speed to 112mph. A total of 21,304 1900 models were built before the range was superseded by the Alfa Romeo 2000 in 1959.
The left-hand drive 1900 SS Coupe on sale was initially exported from Alfa Romeo in Rome to France in 1955. Then in 1980 it returned to Italy where it was campaigned on the track. Subsequently in the same hands for many years, it is considered by the vendor to have "good" bodywork, engine and transmission. The paintwork apparently dates back to 1980 and the interior is as you'd expect of a race-prepared car. This shapely Red-coloured Coupe comes complete with FIA papers and would be an interesting addition to any collection, and guaranteed an entry into numerous historic race meetings. An interesting car, the like of which is rarely seen in the UK.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
