For many, the Jaguar 'D' type is the ultimate 1950s sports racer bar none. With three Le Mans victories and countless podiums to its name, the streamlined two-seater was infused with contemporary aircraft technology. An all time great, it has inspired countless evocations and recreations down the years.
Purpose built for circuit racing, sprints, hillclimbs and track days etc, this D-type Evocation is based on a LR/RAM kit. Mimicking the prototype D-type of 1954, its fibreglass bodywork does without a tail-fin but sports a shortnose front and single windscreen. Reportedly designed by Adrian Reynard, the chassis is equipped with a 3.54:1 differential, Leda adjustable gas suspension, AP Racing discs / callipers and electric power steering (though, the latter feature can be disconnected if so desired). Credited with developing some 308bhp and 384lbft of torque in standard tune (but arguably more with the straight-through, non-catalyst exhaust currently fitted), its Jaguar AJ16 4-litre DOHC 24-valve engine is allied to a five-speed Getrag gearbox. Boasting a dry weight of just 940kg (18.5cwt), the car promises explosive performance and indeed has proved to be a front runner. Said to be "ready to race at the press of the starter button" and to have "completed less than 1,000 miles of motor sport", it rides on alloy wheels. Alternatively, if the idea of donning helmet and gloves does not appeal then the vendor believes that a conversion to road car specification is eminently possible. Finished in white with blue racing stripes (a colour scheme that would not have looked out of place on one of Briggs Cunningham's cars), this well executed D-type Evocation is worthy of close inspection. Great fun, it comes complete with a bespoke galvanised four-wheel trailer.
