To many eyes, the Malcolm Sayer-penned Jaguar D-Type is one of the most beautiful cars of all time and is certainly evocative of the company's golden period in motorsport, that began with the XK120. A direct descendant of the C-Type, it nevertheless shared few major components aside from the indomitable straight-six XK DOHC engine and ground-braking Dunlop disc brakes. Of particular note was the move away from a separate chassis to monocoque construction. The D-Type was quick out of the box and, save for fuel problems, Hamilton and Rolt would have almost certainly taken the model to victory in the 1954 Le Mans race. Hawthorn and Bueb were victorious in 1955 and the Ecurie Ecosse team of D-types were first past the flag in the two ensuing years. D-Type production ran from 1954 to 1957, during which some 52 customer cars and 18 Works ones are thought to have been made. The value of those that remain puts them way beyond the vast majority of us. Happily a few companies have produced excellent tributes to these iconic cars, making it possible for enthusiasts to own the next best thing.

The right-hand drive D-Type Evocation being sold is a case in point. Finished in classic British Racing Green with black leather interior, it is an LR (RAM) model powered by a tuned 4.2-litre XK engine running on triple Weber carburettors. Secreted in a Yorkshire farmer's barn since 2005 and little used (though MOT'd and serviced each year), we are informed that it has recently received much refreshment, including: a rolling road tune; brake overhaul; new steering rack, windscreen, carpets and tonneau; tracking and balancing of the front wheels and a retrimmed fascia. Notable features include a Lynx inlet manifold, adjustable pedals and removable tail fin. This very pretty car is taxed, MOT'd, on the button and ready to enjoy.
