Introduced in 1947, the Mercury 79M Series was visually distinguished from its lesser Ford family siblings by prominent chrome side strakes, a wider bonnet and glitzier radiator grille. Built around a massive perimeter frame chassis equipped with transverse leaf front suspension and hydraulic drum brakes, it was powered by a 239ci (3.9 litre) flathead V8 engine mated to three-speed manual transmission. With a quoted 100bhp and 180lbft of torque on tap, it was reputedly capable of 85mph. Available in Sedan, Coupe, Woody Wagon and Club Convertible guises just 10,221 of the 83,334 79Ms made are thought to have been soft-tops.
Finished in maroon with matching upholstery and a beige fabric hood, this particular left-hand drive example has been part of the collection since 1989. Riding on steel wheels shod with whitewall tyres and chrome hubcaps, it boasts a 110mph speedometer, illuminated pushbutton radio, wood-effect painted dashboard and 'Merlite 59A' rear number plate light. Under the bonnet, its green hued V8 sports a single carburettor and 24-stud cylinder heads.
