An evolution of the Rover 1.8-litre K Series engine, the VVC (Variable Valve Control) unit provides Caterham pilots with effortless performance. Hydraulic valve control brings torque at the bottom end of the rev range without disadvantaging power output at the top end. With VVC, the vital stats are 150bhp at 7000rpm and 128lbs ft of torque at 4500 rpm. Powered by this super-flexible engine, mounted longitudinally driving a 5-speed gearbox, the Seven becomes a perfect all-rounder, being ideal for long distance work, point and squirt cross-country blasts and occasional track days.
Over the years the Lotus inspired tubular spaceframe design has seen much development by Caterham, this car having aluminium honeycomb cockpit side impact protection, aluminium panels and composite nosecone and wings. Suspension is by adjustable double wishbones with anti-roll bar at the front and de Dion axle located by A-frame and upper radius arms at the rear, with coil springs and telescopic dampers.
The current owner purchased the 1998-built Caterham offered here from Barnstable Caterham dealers Midway Motors. He says he has hardly ever exposed the Roadsport 1.8 VVC to the wear and tear of public roads, as confirmed by the 4865 miles indicated when entered, the sportscar always preserved in a heated garage. Current overall cosmetic condition of 2-seater bodywork, yellow paintwork and black interior is described as good, while 4-cylinder engine and manual transmission are reportedly also in good order. The MOT is current until next October.
