At launch in 1961, Jaguar's E-Type was a sensation. Employing monocoque construction, independent suspension and disc brakes all round, the new supercar was clothed in aerodynamic bodywork and powered by the already well-proven XK motor, initially of 3.8 and, from 1964, of 4.2-litre capacity. Increasingly stringent US impact and emission regs in what was Jaguar's largest and most vital foreign currency earning market added weight and reduced performance on the Series 2 E-Type. The Coventry engineers solution was a totally new 5.3-litre 272bhp V12 power unit, which virtually filled the underbonnet area of a new, clearly more powerful and torquey 1971 replacement Series 3 model with, more importantly, cleaner exhaust emissions.
Offered here is a 1972 Browns Lane factory built S3 V12 E-Type, a righthand drive fixed head. The 55,063 miles displayed when entered for the sale is believed by the entrant to be the genuine total mileage for the 2+2 coupe, which also has the benefit of a Webasto sunroof, from new.
The condition of the underbonnet area is described as good, the curvaceous body panels and red paintwork in fair shape, the biscuit beige interior good, while 5.3-litre twelve-cylinder motor, three-speed automatic transmission and electrical equipment are reportedly in good order. This E Type has been well looked after for the last ten years claims the vendor.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
