In 1935, the newly ennobled William Morris sold the MG Car Company to Morris Motors, making it a wholly-owned subsidiary of the larger firm. Even though a part of BMC, BMH, BL, Austin-Rover and now a brand name employed by current owners, Rover Group, MG is still the most famous of all sports cars.
One of the postwar mainstays of the octagonal-badged marque, the MGA stemmed from an aerodynamic prototype first seen competing at Le Mans in the 1951 twenty-four hour classic. Such was the new MGA 1500's impact in the MG dealer showrooms in 1955 that over 13,000 were made during the first year of production. A closed fixed head coupe version joined the open roadster from 1956 onwards.
This MGA was originally built for export at the MG works at Abingdon in 1960 and returned home from rustfree California to be stripped down to the chassis in 1991. During this refurbishment, the classic British sportscar was converted from left to righthand drive, while the open bodywork was repainted, interior trimmed in leather and carpets, tonneau cover and hood fabric renewed.
The original 1.6-litre 4-cylinder engine was rebuilt in 2000, since when it has only done 1500 miles, and the 4-speed manual gearbox rebuilt in 2003. Current condition of chassis and body panels is said to be very good with both paintwork in Chariot Red as well as black and red trim reportedly also very good.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
