The sensational 300 of 1954 and ensuing 190 comprised the first generation of Mercedes-Benz's iconic SL models. The second series was immortalised by its distinctive concave hardtop that resulted in the nickname 'Pagoda '; the third was a larger model of seemingly everlasting capability; while the fourth, the R129 Series, was launched at the Geneva Motorshow of 1989 and based on a shortened version of the W124 floorpan. It was an incredibly well-engineered motor car that simply oozed technical refinement and innovative safety features. The contemporary mechanicals included: independent suspension all round, adaptive damping, ventilated disc brakes with ABS, electronic stability control, a hidden roll-over bar that automatically extended when required, and front air bags. The specification was notably comprehensive and included electrically powered windows, mirrors, seats and a convertible top.
The right-hand drive R129 model on offer is a 1993 300SL powered by the 24-valve straight-six engine of 228bhp coupled to the optional four-speed automatic transmission. It is finished in Silver and trimmed in Black leather and is considered by the vendor to have "very good" bodywork, paintwork, interior trim, engine and transmission. 'K30 PEB' currently displays an unwarranted 106,000 miles and is being sold complete with a history file of bills and receipts etc and an MOT valid into November 2013.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
