Codenamed 'Zest', the TR4 was introduced in 1961 as a replacement for the TR3A. Though it was based on the chassis and drivetrain of its much-loved predecessor it cut a far more modern dash, thanks to an all new Michelotti-styled body. Power was provided by Triumph's proven OHV four-cylinder engine. The capacity was, however, increased to 2138cc. Other mechanical updates included a wider track front and rear, rack and pinion steering and an all-synchromesh gearbox. The optional overdrive was now made to operate on second and third gears as well as top - the result was effectively a close-ratio box with seven speeds. There was also the option of a unique hardtop with fixed glass rear window, integral rollbar and removable centre section. The final iteration of the TR4 was the TR4A, introduced in 1965, which embodied a number of small styling changes and upgrades to the specification.

Manufactured in September 1962, chassis number CT14260L0 was supplied new to Houston, Texas to US left-hand drive specification, as confirmed on the British Motor Heritage Trust Certificate. The TR4 presents very well in its original shade of Power Blue paintwork complemented by a Blue/Grey interior upholstery with White. Repatriated from the United States in 1995, the TR4 was treated to a comprehensive bodywork and mechanical restoration by an RAF engineer. This included conversion to right-hand drive guise, a full chassis-off restoration with a complete engine overhaul. Photographic records and invoices are contained within the accompanying history file. At the same time, the TR4 was fitted with working overdrive, brake servo, green stuff pads, uprated discs and new rear cylinders & shoes. Furthermore, electronic ignition, an uprated starter motor, a Dinomator alternator conversion and a high capacity alloy radiator were fitted, along with a Kenlowe electronic fan, an alloy fuel tank, a stainless steel exhaust and a vintage style Radio/CD player. ‘889 XVY’ is offered with a history file that contains a large selection of invoices, a selection of restoration images, a collection of MOTs and a current V5C document. Well-maintained TR4s are great, usable British classics for anyone seeking a practical and stylish sports car, with this example ready for use this summer.
