Lot details Registration No: 611 XUR Chassis No: TC7727 Mot Expiry: Oct 2009
Introduced in late 1945, the MG TC struck a chord with the buying public despite being almost wilfully old-fashioned. Boasting a wider cockpit than its TB predecessor, the new model was similarly based around a ladder-frame chassis equipped with all-round semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension and nine-inch hydraulic drum brakes. With its dual-cowl dashboard, fold-flat windscreen, cutaway-doors, swept front / rear wings and rear-mounted spare wheel, the TC looked every inch the traditional sports car. Powered by the Abingdon marque's renowned XPAG 1250cc OHV four-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed synchromesh manual gearbox, it was reputedly capable of 78mph. The last MG product to ride on nineteen-inch wire wheels, the TC attracted a strong following in the USA (especially among demobbed servicemen).
According to the T-Register's (www.tregister.org) production record search facility, this particular example - chassis number 'TC 7727' - was built on 27th January 1949. Now finished in Green with British Racing Green leather upholstery, '611 XUK' is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (four-speed manual gearbox), "overhauled" (engine), "very good" (bodywork, paintwork) or "all new" (electrical equipment, interior trim) condition. Said to have "just emerged from a chassis up restoration" during which it was treated to "a new ash frame, body, interior and weather equipment (mohair hood, tonneau cover, hood cover etc)" not to mention "sundry replacement chromework", the two-seater carries twin spare wheels in case one of its oversize 16-inch rear tyres punctures (though, the seller stresses that this modification is reversible). Part of a small private collection, the MG has apparently covered "only a minimal mileage since work was completed" despite the intention that it be "driven rather than just shown". Riding on silver-painted wire wheels, this handsome TC is offered for sale with restoration bills / photographs, assorted minor spares and MOT certificate valid until October 2009.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
