1967 MG C GT

Lot details
Registration No: OAO919F
Chassis No: GCD1/766G
Mot Expiry: June 2012

Introduced in the autumn of 1967, the MGC was originally intended as a flagship replacement for the much loved Austin-Healey 3000. Based around the same two-door monocoque bodyshell as the humble MG B (albeit with a substantially altered engine bay and floorpan), the newcomer was powered by a 2912cc OHV straight-six engine allied to either a four-speed manual gearbox plus overdrive, or three-speed automatic transmission. Equipped with new torsion-bar independent front suspension, telescopic dampers and lower geared rack and pinion steering, it was visually distinguished from the MGB by a 'power bulge' bonnet and taller 15-inch wheels. While early road tests criticised the car's 'nose heavy' handling, later reports were far kinder (which suggests that Abingdon's engineers quickly overcame the larger powerplant's extra mass). The newcomer's engine output of 145bhp and 170lbft of torque certainly provided the car with creditable long-legged performance, and Motor magazine's road test of the Roadster returned a 0-60mph time of 10 seconds and a mean top speed of just over 118mph. They also obtained an overall fuel consumption of 19.3mpg. Despite the C's obvious plus points, the combination of its disappointing debut and the fact that it was too readily confused with its four-cylinder sibling, the MG B, meant it was unceremoniously dropped from the MG range in 1969 after just 4,544 Roadsters and 4,458 GTs had been made. Now, some forty-two years later, the model's lack of period sales success only serves to make it more appealing to collecters.

The right-hand drive GT on offer sports Brooklands Green coachwork mated to a Black leather interior and is equipped with the four-speed manual gearbox plus overdrive. `OAO 919F' has reportedly had seven keepers to date and is described by the vendor as "a well maintained example with many modifications". These apparently include: Spax dampers, a racing exhaust system, high ratio steering rack, stage 2 engine conversion and colour-keyed Minilite wheels. The vendor currently regards the C's bodywork, paintwork, engine and transmission as "good" and the interior trim as "very good". The venerable MG comes complete with numerous old invoices and MOT certificates, plus one valid into June 2012. The indicated mileage is an unwarranted 105,000.
