Triumph's Vitesse has always been popular for its super-smooth six cylinder engine and good power-to-weight ratio. Early examples were criticised for their over-lively swing axle rear suspension, but Triumph cured this for the Mk2 2-litre with an ingenious lower wishbone and driveshaft doughnut arrangement that made the car's handling far more controllable. The ultimate Vitesse saloon is a Mk2 with overdrive and factory sunroof - and Signal Red with Light Tan interior has to be one of the most attractive colour schemes. This example left the factory painted Laurel Green and without the sunroof, but otherwise it is in its original specification.
Purchased by the vendor in 1986, it has been in his possession longest of all the collection. It had had a hard life when purchased and was not very original, but had - and still has - an exceptionally sound main chassis; only outriggers and side rails have needed replacement. Over the last 23 years, the car has been steadily improved while providing regular transport. The engine, overdrive gearbox, differential and suspension were completely overhauled by Canley Classics in 2003 in preparation for the Arctic Winter Trial, a dramatic one-off rally that took the cars all the way to the northernmost road in the world, the North Cape of Norway on Nordkapp island, through deep snow and blizzards. The Vitesse acquitted itself well, finishing third overall and first in class. Subtle modifications include a second heater, alternator, Kenlowe fan and multi-socket. The bodywork now displays several areas of non-structural rust and would benefit from welding in several repair sections, front bumper chassis extensions and a respray. A comprehensive history file is included.
