When first produced by BMC in 1959, the Austin-Healey 3000 with 2912cc six-cylinder engine was an updated version of their 2.6-litre six employed in the 100/6, which, in turn, replaced the earlier 2.6-litre four powered 100/4. The 3000 became even more popular on both sides of the Atlantic as an open-top, traditional British sportscar, which, particularly when fitted with the extra-gear overdrive, was a delight to drive. The unstressed big six would motor on and on and on, too, without complaint. Whilst thanks to BMC factory team and Donald Healey Motor Company participation in the toughest rallies and the major long-distance sportscar races, private entrants really took to the Big Healey.
This 1960-made 3000 MkI was repatriated from the USA in 1990. The now right-hand drive BT7 model was converted during an early 1990's restoration carried out to show standards. The vendor tells us that the sportscar has done only around 8000 miles since this renovation and that currently it is still in `Condition 1' with bodywork and blue over white paintwork reportedly in excellent shape, and leather interior in blue with white piping very good. A blue hood and side screens are included.
Both 3-litre six-cylinder engine and four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive as well as the electrical equipment are reckoned by the vendor to be in very good order. The wheels, 60-spoke wires, are new. It also drives well, he says, with no known faults. He believes that the approximately 63,000 miles displayed when entered to be the genuine total mileage from new. Both MOT and tax disc are current.
