Lot 43 - 1957 Morgan 4/4 Series II

1957 Morgan 4/4 Series II

Sold for £8,494

(including buyers premium)

Lot details
Registration No: VEL 345
Chassis No: A216
Mot Expiry: June 2007

Introduced in 1955, the Series II 4/4 was Morgan's entry level model. Promoted by the Malvern-based manufacturer as "a sports car of first-class performance and appearance for the enthusiast with modest means", its box-section ladder frame chassis featured independent 'sliding pillar' front suspension, a leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle and hydraulic four-wheel drum brakes. True to the marque tradition of using proprietary running gear, it was powered by a Ford-sourced 1172cc sidevalve four-cylinder engine allied to manual transmission. Commendably light thanks to the aluminium over ash construction of its bodywork, the Series II 4/4 was reputedly capable of 75mph plus. Sporting a no-nonsense interior, minimal luggage space and an argumentative hood, it was priced at some £713 17s 0d (including purchase tax). Impractical yet beguiling, the 4/4's legacy lives on to this day.
Upgraded with a more advanced overhead valve 1098cc BMC A-series four-cylinder powerplant at some stage, this particular example is finished in green with black upholstery. Riding on pressed steel wheels, it is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. In the current ownership for nineteen years, we are informed that 'VEL 345' "will be driven to auction 50 miles". Said to be a "good starter", this endearing two-seater is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until May 2007 and historic class (free) road tax.

PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle has an MOT until June 2007.
