Along with MG perhaps, pre-war Riley sports and sporting saloons epitomised the British vintage performance motor car era. Even today, when asked to name a typical 1930s sporting marque, the chances are fairly high that Riley will be at or very the top of the knowledgeable enthusiast's shopping list. For both MG and Riley excelled on the race track as well as in rallies, hill climbs and on sporting trials. One of Riley's greatest demonstrator salesmen was Freddie Dixon, a legend when racing on two wheels as well as four, and one of the most successful of all Riley racers. Postwar, too, Riley traded on this motor sporting heritage, their RMC roadster in particular being an international hit with those seeking a really stylish, though nonetheless sporting road car.
This right-hand drive RMC, which first left the Riley works in Coventry in 1951, was acquired by the vendor in 1978, the previous owner having been an engineer who had ensured that both 2½-litre four-cylinder engine and running gear were maintained in really good order. During this current ownership, he says, the open two-door bodywork has been completely restored.
Finished in ivory over black with black leather interior, the overall condition of KWK 661 is described by the entrant as stunning, the Midland classic which runs superbly attracting much attention wherever it goes. Both chassis and body are very good, he says, paintwork still as new and steel wheels and tyres rated as very good. Twin cam engine, four-speed manual gearbox and electrical equipment are all also reportedly in very good order.
