Lot details Registration No: ONP 613 Chassis No: C7961 Mot Expiry: July 2010
The history of Morgan's 4/4 model traces right back to the company's departure from its traditional 3-wheeler output in 1936. The 4-4 (and post WW2 4/4) designation simply meant four-wheel four-cylinder. Drivability was upped throughout the production by the use of increasingly powerful motors, most often supplied by Ford. The series II was introduced in 1955, and featured the most significant change for the future of the range - a change to the same chassis as the Plus 4 - meant the car's traditional values remained. Separate chassis construction, Morgan's famous sliding pillar independent front suspension (get the grease gun out!) and ash-frame clad with conventional panel pinned bodywork and cutaway doors provided an outlet for the buyer who did not trust newfangled steel coachwork and monocoque 'shells. After five separate series of the cars, the 4/4 was re-named the 4/4 1600 in 1968, and was fitted with contemporary Ford power, though during the '81-'85 period Fiat twin-cams were optional. Ford's new single ohc 'CVH' for 'compound valve-angle/hemispherical' replaced the Ford 'Kent' crossflow in March 1982, and ran until replaced with Ford's Zetec motor in April 1993. The CVH received Ford upgrades whilst in production.
This 1990 example features the 1600cc CVH engine and five-speed all synchromesh gearbox, allowing for excellent fuel economy and superb drive-ability, both hallmarks of the 4/4. The MOT runs until July 2010, so you could jump in and use this low-mileage cherished example straight away. The mileage currently stands at 29,750 and is reportedly supported by a "full service history and bundle of all the expired MOT certificates". The interior is finished in black leather, replaced in 2005, and features a Morgan/Motolita steering wheel, while a stainless luggage rack and Morgan stainless exhaust system are fitted. The vendor describes the car as being in "excellent" condition with regard to its engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork. As a four-seater family convertible, this Morgan is one of the classic car world's greatest secrets - a practical, frugal and quite recent car with undoubted provenance and history. Bearing its self-effacing colour, non-dating registration plate, steel wheels and discreet chrome hubcaps, the car belongs to the finest traditions that classic motoring can offer.
