Lot details Registration No: G357CRU Chassis No: WDB1260362A510538 Mot Expiry: Aug 2013
As the successor to the W116 range, the W126 Series was the second generation of flagship vehicles to bear the S-Class name; which stood for 'sonderklasse' or, in English, 'special class'. The initial line-up of seven Saloon versions was launched at the 1979 Frankfurt Motorshow. Thanks to lighter materials and thorough wind tunnel testing, the newcomers were altogether sleeker and more fuel efficient models than their predecessors. They also showcased a number Mercedes-Benz safety innovations, including: supplemental restraint systems for the airbags, seatbelt pretensioners and traction control. Later versions of the 500SE's 4973cc all-alloy V8 produced 261bhp - sufficient output to sprint this beautifully crafted car to 62mph in around 7.3 seconds. The silky smooth powerplant drove through a four-speed automatic transmission, the suspension was fully independent, the steering was by Mercedes-Benz's own recirculating ball system and braking by discs all round; ventilated on the front.
This right-hand drive 500SE vacated the Stuttgart production line in 1989 and sports Dark Metallic Blue bodywork complemented by Grey leather upholstery. Its odometer currently registers 158,000 unwarranted miles, and the Benz is felt by the vendor to possess "excellent" bodywork, paintwork, interior trim, V8 engine and automatic transmission. 'G357 CRU' is being offered complete with extensively documented history, selection of invoices and an MOT valid until August 2013.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
