The 420 is a greatly underrated Jaguar, offering the compact dimensions and classic interior of the Mark 2 with the vastly improved independent rear suspension of the S-type, the power of the 4.2 E-type and the more grown-up, coherent styling of the MkX. The model was only in production for two years, being effectively a prototype for the XJ6 as, mechanically, it lacked only its over-light power steering. The ultimate specification 420 is the manual/overdrive (automatics were under-geared), which is extremely rare: just a few hundred were built with the attractive polished alloy cam covers and optional power assisted steering and heated rear window. Add in the attractive Opalescent Silver Blue paint with dark blue leather and the 'from new' 420 registration number, and this has to be one of the most desirable 420s.
Acquired by the vendor in 1997 and featured extensively in Classic Cars since and on the cover of Jaguar World in June 2000, this car enjoyed a full engine overhaul in 1998 and extensive body repairs and respray in 2001, since when it has covered less than 10,000 miles. For its last MOT, the front subframe was dropped and the nearside front chassis leg properly recrafted, and new front springs and dampers were fitted. Rear seat belts (three) are fitted to make this a practical classic for the modern family, and a towbar makes it ideal for towing a classic caravan; it pulled the vendor's contemporary Knowsley Juno (which may also be available by separate arrangement) around Goodwood circuit in the 2007 Revival Meeting classic caravan parade.
