Lot details Registration No: 813 NCV Chassis No: 207537D/N Mot Expiry: July 2012
The Jaguar Mk 2 is one of the best-known of all classic Jaguars, not only because it represented great value for high-performance motoring in the 1960s, but because it was a successful car in Touring Car racing, and it also became famous (or, sometimes, notorious) for its use in many British TV and film dramas of later years. Based on the original 2.4/3.4-litre saloons, which were Jaguar's first-ever unit-construction cars, announced in 1955, the Mk 2 followed four years later. Developed from the same basic style (which had been shaped by Jaguar's founder Sir William Lyons), the Mk 2 had a wider rear track, and a much-improved cabin style with increased glass area and an enlarged rear window. Although the detail styling of every car was always the same, for all of them were four-door saloons, (only different badging, on the boot lid and radiator grille, gave more details), there was a choice of three different engines, the 220bhp/3781cc-engined '3.8' being the most powerful, and the most popular: many of the cars had Borg Warner automatic transmission. In more recent years, one of the collectors' attractions to these cars was the easy available of parts and restoration expertise. Mk 2 models were in production from 1959 to 1967 (with the somewhat simplified 240/340 models set to carry on for two more years). In that time a total of almost 84,000 cars were produced. of which 30,141 were 3.8-litre types.
Finished in Metallic Light Blue with Dark Blue leather upholstery, this particular example is said to have undergone a bodywork restoration during the mid-1990s before being sold by Hurst Park Automobiles of Surrey for £25,000 in 1998. Reportedly "an original RHD matching numbers Mk 2 3.8", '813 NCV' sports a stainless steel exhaust, chrome wire wheels and upgraded brakes. Understood to run very well following the recent cleaning, tuning and balancing of its twin SU carburettors, the engine is allied to four-speed manual plus overdrive transmission. The interior apparently boasts "a correct patina of age with good, original wood", while the electrical equipment is understood to "work OK". Nicely presented, this top of the range Mk 2 is offered for sale with document pack and MOT certificate valid until July 2012.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
