Launched at the 1954 Motor Show, the XK140 boasted the same bewitching styling as its forebear but allied it to a host of important mechanical improvements. Chief among these was the adoption of rack and pinion steering. Though, the fitment of telescopic shock absorbers (in place of the XK120's antiquated lever arm dampers) also had a noticeably beneficial effect on handling / roadholding. With its engine and bulkhead repositioned three inches further forward, the new model enjoyed a notably roomier cabin (the fixed and drophead coupe variants gaining occasional rear seats as a result). Available in 'standard', 'special equipment' or 'special equipment plus C-type cylinder head' guises, power and torque outputs ranged from 190bhp / 210lbft to 210bhp / 213lbft. Distinguished by its one-piece bumpers and simpler, more imposing radiator grill, the XK140 was among the fastest cars of its generation. Reputedly capable of over 130mph, it focused public consciousness on Jaguar's continued success at Le Mans (the Coventry marque winning the endurance classic in 1951, 1953, 1955, 1956 and 1957).
Reputedly among the very last of the 733 or so Fixed Head Coupes destined for the Home Market (RHD chassis production began at 804001), this particular example was manufactured on 29th November 1956. Originally finished in British Racing Green with green leather upholstery it was first supplied via Scottish dealer Rossleigh UK. In the current ownership since 1989 (at which time it was in running order), 787 BYD has been an ongoing restoration project for the last sixteen years. Although it left the factory in 'special equipment plus C-type cylinder head' specification, it has since been uprated with a larger 3.8 litre version of Jaguar's legendary XK DOHC straight-six (the block bears the number DX 667 and the head is stamped with NC 5007-8). While this unit together with the chassis and four-speed plus overdrive gearbox are said to have been rebuilt, the rest of the car requires considerable attention. Thought to be substantially complete, there are bills on file for new sill sections, hinge boxes (£681.51) and the front-end primer painting (£622.35). An historic car that deserves saving, it is offered for sale with Heritage Certificate and sundry paperwork.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
