The XJ-S (later the XJS) was Jaguar's replacement for the iconic E-Type, though totally different in character - while the E-Type was an uncompromising sports car of racing heritage, the XJS was more of a Grand Tourer. Based on the XJ Saloon, the dramatically styled Coupe version made its first appearance in September 1975. Initially it was powered by the company's 5.3-litre V12 engine mated to either a manual or automatic gearbox, but the manual option was soon withdrawn. In 1979, the Borg-Warner Model 12 automatic unit was replaced by GM's Turbo-Hydromatic 400 unit. A new High Efficiency engine with increased power was introduced in 1981, along with five-spoke alloy wheels, revised bumpers and updates to the interior trim. The following year, the model somewhat unexpectedly took to the race tracks, taking first and second place in the Silverstone TT. The cabriolet version of the XJS, the XJ-SC, made its debut in 1983, equipped with the new 3.6-litre AJ6 engine. This two-seat model was not a full convertible, having a non-removable centre section and fixed cant rails above the doors. The option of Jaguar's established 5.3-litre V12 engine came in 1985 and in 1988 the Targa-type body was replaced with a fully Convertible one. Some 12,372 Convertible XJSs and 5,013 Cabriolet XJ-SCs were made before the model range was replaced by the XK8 in 1990.
The very pretty right-hand drive V-12-powered XJS offered is one of the full convertible models. Built in 1989 it sports Metallic Blue coachwork matched to a Deep Blue-piped Silverstone leather interior and a deep Blue hood and hood cover. Its impressive specification includes: electrically-powered roof, windows and mirrors; heated seats; cruise control; power assisted steering; stereo system; alloy wheels and driving lamps, plus a leaping cat mascot and dateless registration number - `A5 GEJ' - both of which are included in the sale. The detailed history file shows the care lavished on this Jaguar over the years, including the recent service and MOT. The vendor regards the bodywork, paintwork, trim, engine and automatic gearbox as all "very good". What better way to soak up the promised summer sun than from the luxuriously appointed cabin of a V12-powered XJS convertible.
