1976 Ford Capri 2000 Ghia

Sold for £4,050

(including buyers premium)

Lot details
Registration No: OVX319P
Chassis No: GAECSC04281
Mot Expiry: March 2011

Conceived as a 'European Mustang' - it was nearly called Colt - the Capri brought the American concept of the 'personal car' to British shores, with a huge range of engines and trim options available, from a 1300cc 'four' to a lusty 3-litre V6. But all the while this stylish coupe could seat four, cleverly riding on running gear derived from other cars in the Ford range, principally the MkII Cortina but with the benefit of rack and pinion steering between its MacPherson struts, and a better-located rear axle. The Capri became wider and heavier with its first reskin in 1974, as it evolved into the Mk2 - bringing benefits in the form of more refinement and a hatchback, something the car had been crying out for since its launch in 1969.

Finished in Sebring Red with Black upholstery, this particular 2.0 Ghia has the larger, torquier of the two overhead-cam four-cylinder Pinto engines available for Mk2 and Mk3 Capris, coupled to the slick-shifting four-speed manual gearbox, along with the usual Ghia features of a vinyl top with sliding sunroof. The vendor considers the Ford's electrical equipment and interior trim to be in "good" condition, while he describes its engine, gearbox, bodywork and paintwork as "very good". Informing us that the Capri's Sebring Red livery was renewed during the 1980s due to fading, he adds: "The paperwork and MOTs support the 57,000 miles recorded, and all the panels appear to be original and are of an extremely good fit. The exhaust system was replaced and includes a four-branch manifold - the original comes with the car". Aside from its original stereo suffering from a faulty left channel, this well presented Capri seems something of a 'time warp'. Riding on correct-type wheels, it is offered for sale with the aforementioned paperwork and MOT certificate valid until March 2011.

All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
