Lot details Registration No: UR 2460 Chassis No: 79088 Mot Expiry: Oct 2007
Brainchild of Herbert Austin and Stanley Edge, the Austin 7 looked almost impossibly small when launched in 1922. Occupying the same 'footprint' as a motorcycle and sidecar combination, it nevertheless boasted all the advantages of a 'full-size' motor car. Responsible for helping motorise Britain while simultaneously sounding the cyclecar industry's death knell, the baby Austin was brilliantly yet simply engineered. Based around an 'A-frame' chassis equipped with all-round leaf-sprung suspension, four-wheel drum brakes and a spiral bevel back axle, it was powered by a sewing machine-esque 747cc sidevalve four-cylinder engine allied to three-speed manual transmission. Available in a bewildering number of guises, the 7 remained in production until 1939.
H&H Classic Auctions are indebted to the vendor for the following description. "I purchased this car at H&H Buxton in 1998. It has been kept garaged throughout my ownership. Taken out on very dry days and used regularly throughout the summers, it has often carried four adults proving amazingly roomy. Wherever the Austin goes it always draws a gathering of admirers. It is a most delightful looking car with its friendly face, red bonnet and red coach lines on a black fabric body. The interior is red, has the benefit of wind-up windows and a tilt-out windscreen not to mention the most delightful horn. It is accompanied by buff / green logbooks, a selection of MOTs (the current one expiring in October 2007) and license discs going back many years. The car still retains its original registration number 'UR 2460', many vehicles these days having lost theirs due to the fashion of transfers. It is believed that the saloon is original and has not been subject to a restoration. In my opinion, it does not need one having the patina of a very good and pampered life. Indeed, it still retains a dashboard plaque from the supplying dealer. I believe this model to be fairly rare, having been to many events not seeing anything to match it. I have to state that this car will be sorely missed, I see it most days, it really has been part of the family, but events have dictated that it must go".
