Lot details Registration No: FVL544X Chassis No: WPOZZZ92ZC5800351 Mot Expiry: May 2012
Styled by American Tony Lapine, Porsche's front-engined, water-cooled, V8-powered 2+2 928 was launched at the 1977 Geneva Motor Show. Not only was it about as mechanically different to the ubiquitous 911 as it could possibly be, but it also represented the company's first foray into grand touring territory. Nevertheless it received a rapturous reception from the press and was duly awarded the 1978 Car of The Year Award. If the car had a problem, it was that it was signed off during one major fuel crisis and launched during the next. Whatever, production of the 928 continued until 1995, by which time some 61,000 examples had been made. At launch, the all-alloy engine was 4474 cc in capacity and produced some 240bhp. The galvanised steel monocoque frame was suspended on double wishbone coil-sprung suspension at the front and lower wishbone with upper transverse link and coil springs at the rear. The car featured ventilated disc brakes all round, while the gearbox (five-speed manual or three-speed automatic) was rear-mounted and integral with the axle. The 928S introduced in 1979 featured an enlarged engine of 4664 cc and a commensurate increase in performance - the 0-60mph dash was now covered in 6.2 seconds and the top speed up in the 155mph region.
The manual transmission, right-hand drive 928S being offered is a 1982 example finished in Red complemented by a Black half-leather interior. 'FVL 544X' is being sold with: a new MOT and large history file including all past MOT certificates which, we are told, put the total mileage at circa 130,000 - some 20,000 more than is indicated due to a change of speedometer at some stage. The vendor regards the Porsche's bodywork, paintwork, trim, engine and transmission as all being in "good" order. It is ironic that the 928 was intended to replace the 911, yet its life spanned just 18 years while the 911 is still very much with us after a 47 year reign. However, the 928 is a fine car and to this day there are few more satisfying ways to traverse Europe than behind the wheel of a well-sorted example; considering which they represent extraordinary value in the current market.
PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle has an MOT until May 2012.
PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle is equipped with Automatic transmission and not Manual as stated in the catalogue.
