Lot details Registration No: AWA745G Chassis No: IA35098BW Mot Expiry: Nov 2005
Introduced in 1966, the Daimler Sovereign (alongside its Jaguar 420 twin) was the ultimate development of the 'small cat' line that had begun some eleven years earlier with the MKI. Slotting between the 3.8 S-type and the top of the range MKX, the Sovereign / 420 served in many ways as a testbed for the forthcoming XJ6's styling / mechanical layout. Featuring all round independent coil-sprung suspension, disc brakes and a detuned version (245bhp versus 265bhp) of its MKX sibling's 4235cc, straight six dohc engine, it was a far more sophisticated design than the MKII with which it shared a glasshouse / passenger cell. Only in production between 1966 and 1969, the Sovereign is among the rarest of Daimler's post-war saloons.
Finished in sapphire blue with blue leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in very good overall condition (apart from its currently disconnected heated rear window). Said to be in daily use and to have proven "extremely reliable", it is equipped with a Borg Warner automatic gearbox and expensive CD system. Believed to have covered 83,250 miles from new (although this cannot be substantiated from the accompanying paperwork), it benefits from professionally renewed carpets and headlining. Offered for sale with tool kit and history file (the latter containing MOT certificates dating back to 1990 and "receipts for many thousands spent on restoration"), this elegant four-door saloon qualifies for historic class (free) road tax.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
