After a lengthy gestation period, the now ubiquitous Porsche 911 entered production in 1964. The design was the work of Dr Ferry Porsche's eldest son, Ferdinand 'Butzi' Porsche and the company's joint founder and chief body engineer Erwin Komenda. The car featured rack and pinion steering and both torsion bar suspension and disc brakes all round. It was initially powered by a dry-sump, air-cooled, 2-litre, flat six engine which was overhung at the rear and allied to a five-speed manual transmission. In 1968, the 911's wheelbase was increased by 57mm, and the rear overhang reduced by the same amount. At the same time, some 22lb was saved from the (overhung) engine crankcase by switching its manufacture from aluminium to magnesium. These changes greatly improved the car's handling. Since its birth, the 911's story has been one of such continual evolution.
Introduced for the 1974-model year, the G-series 911 Carrera is something of a well-kept secret in Porsche circles. Although festooned with 5mph impact absorbing bumpers so as to appease contemporary American safety legislation, the high-performance sports car boasted much the same running gear and kerb weight as its legendary homologation special forebear, the Carrera RS 2.7. Equipped with new forged aluminium trailing-arm rear suspension, 20mm / 18mm anti-roll bars, gas-filled Bilstein shock absorbers and Fuchs alloys, the G-series 911 Carrera was powered by a mechanically fuel-injected 210bhp Type 911/83 engine (though, non Euro zone versions made do with a detuned Type 911/93 unit). Further benefiting from a revised instrument binnacle, high backed sports seats, inertia reel seat belts and electric windows, Porsche's flagship was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 6.3 seconds and 149mph. Only in production for twelve months, just 1,036 Euro-specification G-series 911 Carrera Coupes are thought to have been made.
The 1974 Carrera offered is a right-hand drive manual example finished in brown with cream leather interior. The vendor describes his "much loved" car as having "immaculate" bodywork and paintwork, while he rates its engine and gearbox as "excellent". The Carrera is MOT'd until the end of August.
PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle has a brake fluid leak and fluid has been found in the front foot wells. We would strongly advise that the source of the leak is identified and repairs effected before the car is driven any further.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
