Introduced at the 1966 Earls Court Motor Show, the Jensen Interceptor was met with great enthusiasm. Styled by the Italian carrozeria Vignale, its handsome 2+2 coupe bodywork was fabricated from steel (in contrast to the fibreglass used by its 541 / CV8 predecessors) and featured a distinctive wraparound rear windscreen, Equipped with independent coil and wishbone front suspension, a 'live' rear axle and four-wheel disc brakes, it handled with aplomb. Powered by a Chrysler-sourced 383ci (6.3 litre) V8 engine, the vast majority were fitted with automatic transmission. Subject to a programme of continual revision, the Interceptor III (together with its SP and FF III siblings) debuted at the 1971 Earls Court Motor Show. Boasting a revised interior and smart five-spoke GKN alloy wheels, it was soon upgraded with a 440ci (7.2 litre) unit. Whilst, this did nothing for the fuel economy it gave a welcome further boost to the model's already towering performance (contemporary press reports spoke of 140mph and 0-60mph in 6.4 seconds).
Finished in metallic red with a black vinyl roof covering, this particular example is thought to be one of just 425 '140-code' left-hand drive Interceptor III 'J-series' cars built. Trimmed in black leather with beige carpets and a light grey pleated headlining, its interior also boast electric windows, power steering, air conditioning and a Blaupunkt radio-cassette player. Although not warranted, the car's general demeanour suggests that the 17,877 kilometres shown by its odometer may possibly represent the total covered from new.
