1974 Lamborghini Urraco P250

Lot details
Registration No: XGC825M
Chassis No: 15662
Mot Expiry: Oct 2013

Unveiled at the November 1970 Turin Motor Show (but not put on sale until late 1972), the Lamborghini Urraco P250 was conceived as a rival to the likes of the Ferrari Dino 246, Maserati Merak and Porsche 911. Principally engineered by Paolo Stanzani, its sheet-steel monocoque bodyshell boasted Bob Wallace honed all-round independent coil-over wishbone suspension and ventilated four-wheel disc brakes. A handsome 2+2 seater design with distinctive rear three-quarter engine vents and a Miura-style slatted rear windscreen guard, its styling was the work of Marcello Gandini at Bertone. Named in the best Lamborghini tradition after a particularly fierce breed of bull, the Urraco benefited from a bespoke powerplant. Designated Tipo L240, the 90-degree SOHC V8 utilised an aluminium block and cylinder heads. Fed by four twin-choke Weber carburettors, the 'over-square' (86mm bore x 53mm stroke) 2463cc unit was credited with 220bhp and 166lbft of torque. Transversely mid-mounted and allied to the marque's own five-speed manual transmission, it reputedly enabled the Urraco to sprint from 0-60mph in 6.6 seconds and onto 149mph. Only in production for four years, a mere 520 P250s are estimated to have left the Sant'Agata Bolognese factory.
Finished in Giallo (Yellow) with Tan upholstery, this particular example - chassis number 15662 - won Lamborghini Club UK's prestigious 'V8 Car of the Year' award during 2008. Further notable for being to right-hand drive specification (RHD cars have traditionally accounted for just 10% or so of Sant'Agata production), the Urraco's past prior to its importation to the UK in 1989 is a mystery. Registered as 'XGC 825M' to M. Fionda Esq. of London on August 18th that year - at which time its odometer displayed an unwarranted 22,475km (the same instrument now shows 34,596km) - the 2+2-seater is thought to have passed through the hands of J. Struggles Esq of Chesterfield, A. Couper Esq of Bromley, S. Sargent Esq of Bromley, D. Hunt Esq of Bexleyheath and B. Standen Esq of Warlingham before entering the current ownership during April 2011 (the car's V5C Registration Document notes six former keepers).

Entrusted to Gold Motors of Peckham for a photographically documented bare metal respray in 1997, chassis 15662 had its paintwork refreshed by Alsa Automotive of Hirwaun at a cost of circa £1,500 some thirteen years later. Benefiting from around £6,000 worth of fettling at the hands of Grimaldi Engineering Ltd during 2008, work saw attention paid to the Lamborghini's wiring, engine gaskets, differential seals and other incidentals. Recently treated to "a full service including cam belt", the 2+2-seater sports a stainless steel exhaust system and is understood to register "3.2 kg/cm2 oil pressure at 80 degrees whilst idling".

A much underrated machine, this rare RHD Urraco is offered for sale with history file and MOT certificate valid until October 2013.
