Although previewed at the 1953 Earls Court Motor Show, customer deliveries of the new Jensen 541 did not start until 1955. Based like its Interceptor predecessor on Austin running gear (as indeed was the A-H 100/4 Jensen also produced under contract), it was nevertheless an avant garde design. Employing a tubular framed chassis in which to house its A70 suspension / steering assemblies and A135 3993cc, ohv, straight six engine, its dramatic, cutting edge glassfibre bodywork was penned by Eric Neale. Judged by many to possess one of the most striking 1950s silhouettes, the luxury sports coupe was well received by the contemporary motoring press. Introduced in October 1960, the final S version benefited from a more spacious interior courtesy of its revised wider-track suspension. Notable as the first UK production car to be fitted with front seatbelts as standard, the majority of 541S(s) also came with a Rolls-Royce four-speed automatic gearbox and Powr-Lok limited slip differential. Visually distinguished by a new radiator grille, a mere 127 were made before production ceased in 1963.
According to information kindly supplied by the Jensen Owner's Club, this particular example left the factory on 8th January 1963. Originally UK registered as '108 EXN' it is thought to have been supplied new via Charles Follett Ltd of 18 Berkeley St, London W1. Resident in Germany by the mid 1980s, it has been part of the collection since 1991. Finished in metallic blue with grey leather upholstery, it shows an unwarranted 58,118 miles on its odometer but has not seen road use in some time.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
