Designed by Geoff Ferris with the flexibility of being suitable for F2, F3 or FB/Atlantic customers, this 1972-built Brabham BT38C to Formula 3 spec was campaigned on the international circuit during 1972 by Randy Lewis. Period records indicate that Lewis and this car finished 7th at Estoril, 12th at Charade and 14th at Thruxton as well as turning out at Brands Hatch and Rouen.
The FIA papers with the single seater also record MRE ownership 1973/4, modification for hillclimbing by Pilbeam 1974-80, storage during Phil Kidsley ownership 1980-87, and further inaction during Mike Brookes ownership. Peter Denty, acquired the car in 1987 and carried out a total rebuild 1995, since when it has been rarely raced.
As presented today, this historic Brabham is competition ready with, judging from a most detailed November 2002 invoice for £5883.21p in the documents file, the Lotus Ford Twin Cam 1.6-litre four with dry sump superbly rebuilt with only some dyno running time clocked up. The 5-speed Hewland Mk8 reportedly in very good order too.
Monocoque (this was the first production Brabham model with this type of chassis construction) and 3-section bodywork in GRP are said to be in very good condition and the blue and yellow paintwork as new. Whilst apart from some genuine period racing provenance, also included with this potentially competitive package are a spare nosecone and another cockpit cover, which are both new, and some spare wheels with a new set of racing wets.
