Final iteration of the best-selling Chevrolet Fleetliner series, the Fleetliner Deluxe was introduced in 1949. A commodious steel-bodied sedan featuring independent coil-and-wishbone front suspension, a leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes, it could be had with either two or four doors. One of the first affordable American cars to offer automatic transmission as an option, it was powered by Chevrolet's famous OHV 'Stovebolt Six' in both 216.5ci (3548cc) and 235ci (3851cc) guises. Not wanting for road presence thanks to its wide-mouthed grille, bulbous wings and generous brightwork, the model was confidently marketed by Chevrolet as 'The Big Car for Less'. Although deservedly popular throughout its three-year production life, surviving Fleetliner Deluxes are comparatively few and far between.
Finished in red with red / white upholstery, this particular left-hand drive example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, wheels / tyres) or "excellent" (3500cc engine, three-speed manual gearbox, bodywork, paintwork) condition. The subject of an older restoration, 'ASL 655' is reputed to have won many awards Stateside before being imported to the UK in 1998. Said to have been "carefully maintained for many years", the sedan has apparently spent the last thirty six months or so "stored in an Air Tent". Riding on steel wheels shod with slimband whitewall tyres, this imposing piece of Americana is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until May 2008 and historic class (free) road tax valid until May 2008.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
