Reputedly one of just nine RHD Z3M Roadsters to be finished in Evergreen with Evergreen / Black leather upholstery, initially served as a demonstrator model. The all-important running-in check was carried out by BMW (GB) Ltd at 816 miles on 16th January 1998 and thereafter the two-seater has been serviced at 4,567, 6,147, 7,963, 11,057, 15,679, 18,467, 20,430, 21,778, 25,562, 29,222, 30,495 and 31,405 miles (the latter being an Inspection II). Entering the current ownership five years ago, ‘R678 NPN’ is warranted to have covered just 34,500 miles from new. As might be expected of an ex-demonstrator, the car’s generous specification includes a factory hardtop (complete with stand and heated rear window) and heated seats etc. The original first aid kit, tyre compressor, book pack, keys and tools come with the BMW as does a ring binder of invoices / receipts. A rare version of an increasingly collectible modern classic.
Model Background:
By shoehorning the drivetrain of the four-seater M3 (E36) coupe into the bodyshell of the two-seater Z3 Roadster, BMW effectively created a factory ‘hot rod’. Boasting a wider track, lower ride height, stiffer springs / shock absorbers and thicker anti-roll bars than its lesser siblings, the M Roadster also featured a limited slip differential, reinforced subframe and vented disc brakes. Powered by a 3.2 litre DOHC straight-six engine allied to ZF five-speed manual transmission, the svelte BMW had some 317bhp and 258lbft of torque on tap and was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 5.3 seconds and 155mph (limited). Later versions, from February 2001 onwards, came with the marginally more powerful S54 engine plus Dynamic Stability Control (though, some drivers preferred the rawer, more analogue feel of the early cars). Of the 15,322 Z3 M Roadsters made between September 1996 and May 2002, just 991 were to RHD specification.
