One of the best looking and most successful sports racers of all time, the Ferrari 250GTO has, thanks to the efforts of parent company FIAT's lawyers, officially been classified as a 'work of art'. With just thirty-six examples manufactured and an asking price of £15,000,000 upwards, they will forever be beyond the reach of mere mortals. However, given enough ingenuity most things are possible. Highly convincing, this particular Ferrari 250GTO Evocation was reportedly created by Andy Turner in 1989. Said to have been based on a freshly overhauled 1978 Datsun 260Z - hardly surprising given Mr Turner's nickname of `Mr Z' - it retains the donor car's basic monocoque and running gear. Thus under its fibreglass skin, `GTO 776' is equipped with all-round independent coil-sprung suspension, front / rear anti-rollbars, rack and pinion steering and servo-assisted disc / drum brakes. Riding on chrome `knock on' wire wheels (6x15 front / 8x15 rear), it is powered by a 2.8 litre SOHC straight-six engine allied to five-speed manual transmission.
As well as Perspex headlamp covers held in place by chrome bezels, other appealing exterior details include the GTO-style side / tail and rear numberplate lamps. Since entering the current ownership via Mr Turner in 1996, `GTO 776' has apparently benefited from a retrim in red leather plus the addition of a Nardi steering wheel and full harness seat belts; these alterations complementing its existing GTO-style dashboard and exposed chromed gear lever gate nicely. Wearing Cavallino Rampante shields to each flank, a final flourish is provided by the bespoke exhaust system which culminates in four authentic looking Snaps tail pieces. Described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim and bodywork (though, he rates the paintwork as "excellent"), this striking Ferrari 250GTO Evocation is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until March 2010.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
