Lot details Registration No: MFO 521 Chassis No: TD7476 Mot Expiry: May 2011
The first of the post-war MGs was the TC. It bore great similarity to the pre-war TB and was fitted with basically the same 1250cc OHV XPAG engine that was common to the Morris 10 of the period. The major difference between the TB and TC was the interior - the latter benefiting from a wider cockpit. The TC was superseded by the TD in 1950. Though visually quite similar to the earlier cars, it was built around a more modern chassis derived for the Y-Type saloon. The benefits included coil spring independent suspension at the front, rack and pinion steering, smaller 15-inch disc type road wheels and the option of LHD. The newcomer also boasted a hypoid bevel rear axle, hidden scuttle reinforcement hoop and twin leading shoe front brakes, and was five inches wider than its predecessor. Bumpers and over-riders joined the list of standard equipment for the first time. Some 30,000 TDs had been produced by the time the model gave way to the TF in 1953, all but around 1,600 or so of which were exported - some 23,500 going to the USA alone.
A case in point, the 1951 TD being sold started life as a left-hand drive American model. It was repatriated in the `90s, restored and converted to RHD. We are told it is recognised by the MG Car Club's T Register and that it's been part of a private MG collection for the last 12 years and fully maintained yet little used. We understand the tyres and weather equipment are virtually new and that the TD is fitted with a Motolita woodrim steering wheel. Finished in Red with a Biscuit leather interior, `MFO 521' comes complete with original sales brochure and handbook, is taxed and MOT'd into next year and seemingly ready to satisfy a new owner.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
