To counter the Austin-Healey Sprite budget sports from their then arch rivals BMC, Triumph rushed out the Spitfire, which was an open 2-seater version of the Herald saloon, employing the same 1147cc engine, chassis and swing-axle rear suspension. Styled by Michelotti, Spitfire Mk’s I to V were made 1962 to 1980. Pitched against the MGB GT, a 1998cc 6-cylinder Vitesse engined Spitfire with fixed head fastback coupe body, the GT6 MkI, was offered 1966-1968. The 1968-1970 GT6 MkII had improved rear suspension and higher MkIII Spitfire bumpers, whilst the improved 1970-1973 GT6 MkIII with Spitfire MkIV styling ended the line. Once considered the ‘poor man’s E-Type Jaguar’, this gutsy Triumph GT is now very much sought after by collectors with values on the rise as a consequence.
Manufactured in 1972 with the 1998cc straight-six engine and manual gearbox, this GT6 has been across seven keepers in total. Bought by the previous keeper in 2014 from a Mrs Laxton who had been the keeper of the car from 1981, with much expenditure at West Country Triumph to assist with the body-off restoration following their purchase. Two boxes of bills and invoices detail its previous history, including covering a multitude of parts from specialists James Paddock, Rimmer Brothers and Canley Classics used in its recent restoration. Evident works include engine refurbishment with a rebore, new pistons, new shells on a reground crank, fresh valves, guides, and springs, with the gearbox being provided new synchros, a new layshaft and new gears. In addition, the differential was stripped fitted with new bearings and seals. A radiator re-core and electronic ignition have additionally been fitted along with numerous other parts. Interior refurbishment included new seat foams and seat covers, carpets and headlining.
Presented today on period-style ‘Cosmic’ wheels, the GT6 is not fitted with a rear bumper, but one is provided for the sale (although it does require re-chroming) with number plate light should the new owner which to fit one. Offered with the extensive history file including the invoices, as well as a large selection of past MOTs and tax discs, the Triumph is offered with an MOT until October 2021. ‘APU 342L’ is supplied with an accumulation of spares which comprises of trim pieces, hub caps, oil and air filters, gears, starting system parts and lights. Having covered minimal mileage over the past ten years, the GT6 is now ready to be enjoyed.
