Introduced to the UK market in 1981, the Starion Turbo was intended to compete with the likes of the Toyota Celica, Mazda RX-7, and Porsche 924. Built around a two-door monocoque shell, its advanced specification included all-round independent suspension (MacPherson strut front, coil-sprung rear), ventilated disc brakes (later available with single-channel ABS), power-assisted steering, and a limited-slip differential. Benefiting from a new water-cooled turbocharger on either a 2.0-litre or 2.6-litre straight-four engine, and allied to a five-speed manual gearbox, it endowed the Starion with ferocious acceleration (Autocar magazine recording 0-60mph in 6.6 seconds, 0-100mph in 18 seconds, and 140mph flat out during a 22nd May 1985 road test). A regular sight in the 1980s Group A and Group N circuit racing, the Mitsubishi was driven to numerous victories by Colin Blower and Dave Brodie, while Pentti Arikkala used one to finish second behind Jimmy McRae in the 1988 British Rally Championship.

Manufactured in 1988 this Starion was first UK registered in November that year. Originally finished in Red, receiving a colour change to the current Black in 2002, however, the Starion is still retaining its original Black leather interior. This 2.0-litre example has been in current ownership since 2014 and has covered a total of 115,628 miles, although the mileometer shows 15,628 miles due to a clock fault upon reaching 100,000 miles.

The 2.0-litre engine has been subject to a rebuild by Whitefield Race Engines, covering only 500 miles since the rebuild which was completed four years ago with invoices on file for the works completed. Benefitting from a modified vernier cam gear, forged rods and pistons, uprated camshaft, and head enhancements with new valve stem seals, valves and seats re-cut, and a skimmed head. The turbo has been rebuilt by Turbo Solutions, and a larger radiator fitted, with both water and oil pumps renovated. The Starion also boasts having a fully forged cylinder head, new alternator, starter motor, and full stainless steel Janspeed exhaust system.

New springs, dampers servicing, and new Uniroyal tyres which have covered under 1000 miles have all been provided the Mitsubishi. In addition, the front and rear calipers have been overhauled with the front receiving pistons, cleaned discs, and new brake pads, in addition to wheel bearing renewal. Receiving welding on the rear quarters, inner tubs, floor repairs, and outer and inner sills, ‘EXZ 5661’ has since been undersealed.

Recently serviced which included an oil and filter change, engine flush, new plugs, and drive-shaft repairs. The Starion is additionally offered with a large history file, spare key and pair of side-skirt for the sale, the history file includes a full V5C, original owners handbook and workshop manual, a collection of past invoices, past service records, past MOTs beginning in 2002, and an MOT until the 24th August 2021.
