Introduced in the May of 1962, the monocoque MG B was a welcome progression from the body-on-frame T-Series and MG A models that preceded it. The more modern construction resulted in weight savings (the car turned the scales at 2028 lb), reduced manufacturing costs and notably tauter handling. Initially, the B was only available in Roadster form - the hatchback GT derivative not being offered until 1965. Suspension was by wishbones and coil springs at the front, and a 'live' axle mounted on leaf springs at the rear. Damping was by lever arm units all round. Braking was by discs at the front and drums at the rear. At launch, the model was powered by a three-bearing version of the 1798cc B-Series engine that produced 95bhp at 5,400rpm. However, with an eye on superior reliability, this unit was replaced by a five-bearing one two years into production.
The right-hand drive Roadster offered was manufactured in 1971, and then is said to have been extensively restored and treated to a new Heritage shell in 1994 by Renault Leicester. It is finished in Flame Red with a black leather interior. The vendor purchased the car two years later and has apparently driven to every Le Mans 24 Hour race since, some times towing a small trailer - hence the tow bar. We understand a new rear axle was fitted seven/eight years ago and new stub axles added 4/5 years ago. Evidently the car comes complete with a photographic record of the restoration, plus: a white hardtop; duck hood; duck tonneau; wire wheel tool and hammer; original jack; radio; Renault alarm; Kenlowe electric fan and glass security etching. The MG has a fresh MOT and is taxed until the end of the year. The vendor describes the coachwork and paintwork as "excellent", the engine and gearbox as "good" and the interior as "original". Thanks to their well-made shells, stress-free engines and simple but effective running gear, some third of the 524,000-plus MG Bs produced between 1962 and 1980 are thought to remain extant today. Winding through the British countryside on a sunny summer's day to the distinctive tune of an MG B Roadster is one of motoring's great pleasures.
