The Rover 2000 (or P6 in Rover design parlance) marked a major advance on its 1963 launch both for Rover (for whom it was their first truly modern car for 15 years) and for the market in general as it virtually created the 'compact executive' market segment which would eventually see the demise of traditional barge-like executive saloons. Compact, sporty, very comfortable and attractively styled the 2000 was an immediate success. Rover did not rest on their laurels however and continued to develop the 2000 with the launch of both a quicker TC and an Automatic model in 1966. However, the very able chassis was able to handle still more power and so Rover engineers slotted in the V8 3528cc ex-GM engine which had recently transformed the staid P5 model, to create the unusually titled Three Thousand Five. The silky, brawny V8 engine and standard automatic transmission suited the relaxed demeanour of the P6 perfectly and due to the lightness of the all-alloy unit and the use of wider section wheels/tyres the well-balanced, supple handling remained substantially unaffected. A predictable success the Three Thousand Five also found favour with the police for whom this car turned out to be just the motorway patrol car they had been crying out for. Facelifted (not very successfully to many eyes) in 1970 the P6 was advanced enough to continue in production until 1976.
Finished in tobacco leaf with a tan leather interior this 1969 car has only covered a warranted 25,000 miles from new by one registered owner. We are told by the vendor that this example was fitted at the factory with a P5B specification engine using an automatic choke instead of manual and it is rated according to the V5 registration document as 3531cc. We are also told that a replacement nearside rear door was fitted when the tester bumped the car during the 1984 MOT test. Described as 'good' with regard to engine, transmission, electrics, interior trim, paintwork, chassis, bodywork & wheels/tyres the car will be presented to the sale with a fresh MOT and tax until March 2008. Early Three-Thousand Fives are now rare, especially with such low mileage, making this one worthy of closer inspection.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
