From making motorised invalid carriages, Bert Greeves and his cousin started producing motorcycles in Essex, the marque becoming one of the most famous of all the British off-road bike makers. Apart from trials and motocross machines, Greeves also built 250cc and 350cc roadsters with two-stroke engines sourced from British Anzani or Villiers with names such as Fleetmaster, Sportsman and Sports Twin.
Off-road, a Greeves Hawkstone was the scrambler to have, the European 250cc championship of 1960 and 1961 won by Greeves master and film stunt supremo Dave Bickers. Bill Wilkinson's great Scottish Six Days Trial victory of 1969 was achieved on a 250cc Villiers-powered Greeves Anglian. Sadly, with the comp bike market swamped with cheaper imports, Greeves production stopped in 1972.
In the early 1960s, Greeves went into the road and circuit racing business by offering a production racer, and one such Greeves Silverstone, chassis 24 RA which was made in 1962, is offered here. One of the first of the Silverstones, it is finished in blue, and has a Villiers Star Maker single-pot 250cc motor, which the vendor tells us has the benefit of extra engine mods by Greeves.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
