Featuring a distinctive Shapecraft aluminium hard top and boot lid by Barry Wood of Surbiton Motors, this extremely competitive Elan was shown at the 1964 Racing Car Show as verified by Barry during its original rebuild. It is understood to have been used as a road car until purchased by Don Hands of Lightwork Racing, who converted it for track use and raced it successfully over a number of years including two class wins at the Spa 6 Hours. It was then part exchanged for a road-going Elite and acquired by the vendor who has continued to campaign and develop the car.
In order to make it lighter and more competitive a complete rebuild was undertaken in 2009/2010 by Mike Loughlin, a well-known preparer of racing 26R's. Although a GTS model, it has been developed into full 26R specification whilst retaining the original hardtop and boot lid. Since then it has been used to good affect by the vendor with successes at national and international level, specifically at the Spa 6 Hour event.
Having made the decision to retire from racing, the vendor allowed it to be campaigned by Ed Morris during 2013 and, in its present specification, some amazing performances were achieved including a 2min 54.1 sec. lap at Spa during qualifying for the Gentleman Drivers race in September 2013.
Weighing in on the minimum weight limit of 580kg, the engine and gearbox have completed one event since a rebuild. The tyres have also completed only one race. Fitted with an 80 litre fuel tank and Tillett FIA spec seat, the car is road registered and equipped for rally events thus making it a highly competent all rounder. Offered with Swansea V5, old logbook, two history files, FIA & HTP papers and MoT '863 EJU' represents that rare opportunity to acquire a well-sorted and extremely competitive example.
PLEASE NOTE: We have been informed that this vehicle is featured in the book 'The Original Lotus Elan 1962-73' by Paul Robinshaw.
