Particularly aimed at the American market, the immortally striking Karmann Ghia was Volkswagen's answer to creating a halo model for its unashamedly austere Beetle range. Available in both Coupe and Cabriolet guise, it was styled by Luigi Segre of Carrozzeria Ghia and hand-built around Beetle mechanicals by the famed German coachbuilder Karmann - hence the name. Production ran from 1955 to 1974, during which 445,238 examples were built in Germany, of which 364,401 were Coupes.
The very original-looking 1.6-litre example offered for sale is a left-hand drive model featuring White bodywork matched to an all-Black interior. It was first UK registered in July 1996 and is currently displaying an unwarranted 82,106 miles (at some stage the original kph speedometer was replaced by an mph one). 'AUF 97K' was evidently treated to a replacement alternator in 2010 and benefited from some £1,800 worth of maintenance by marque specialist Beetle Link in 2011 and 2012 - this included a service, new battery, brake overhaul and a degree of general mechanical fettling. The VW is now being sold complete with: a Sony stereo system with CD and USB connectivity; a collection of invoices for the recent work carried out; and a MOT certificate valid until November 2016.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
