A.J. Stevens & Co Ltd produced motorcycles from 1897 and soon developed their own engines including parallel twins and 'V-twin' designs sold under the more recognisable AJS name. Success in racing soon followed with Eric Williams' win in the 1914 TT, the firm also taking second, third, fourth and sixth places beginning a long line of sporting achievements. An amalgamation with Matchless in 1931 formed Associated Motor Cycles which continued until the group's closure in the mid-60s. The Model 31 together with its Matchless G12 equivalent was developed to compete with the other big twins being offered by the rival BSA/Triumph group at the time.
In 1959 the Model 31 was redesigned and modernized as the De Luxe with a new full cradle tubular duplex frame and a new cylinder head. Vibration had always been a problem, so the crankshaft was upgraded to nodular iron. Capable of 100 mph performance, the AJS Model 31 became popular with the American market. This beautiful 1961 Model 31 was supplied to dealers Redhill Motors Ltd of Lewes in late 1960 and was first registered on the 20th January 1961 and comes together with an AJS/Matchless Owners Club dating certificate. Part of a small private collection of AMC produced motorcycles, the bike was restored to a very high standard by its owner who sadly passed away in 2019. An engineer by trade, he even crack tested the crank during the rebuild and the bike comes fitted with period crash bars and rear carrier. Last run in 2020 and stored carefully since it will need a light recommissioning before use and comes supplied with a current V5C and a notebook detailing work carried out.
