Sunbeam Cycles was founded by John Marston Limited of Wolverhampton in 1887, initially producing bicycles and from 1912 to 1956 motorcycles, becoming part of the BSA group in 1943. Sunbeam motorcycles gained fame for their very high standards of workmanship, speed and reliability with races won all over Europe in the early half of the 1920s.
This short stroke 3 1/2 horsepower 500 is presented in sports trim and has spent most of its life in the Isle of Man on registration number MN1120. Unfortunately the Manx authorities don't keep records so we have not been able to shed any light on its time there but it arrived back on the mainland in 2007, being given its current registration number BF4249. Bought by the vendor in 2009 it has not been run for a couple of years so will need some recommissioning before use but will make a great bike for events like the famous Banbury run. Interestingly it is fitted with a Best and Lloyd oil pump, a set of George Dance knee grips and a pad on the rear mudguard suggesting a sporting past. Supplied with a current V5C and a few old MOTs.
