Lot details Registration No: YMA292F Chassis No: 121648DN Mot Expiry: Sept 2011
Synonymous with the swinging '60s, the MKII has, at least until very recently, been Jaguar's most widely admired saloon. Featuring notably slimmer roof pillars than its MKI forebear, the newcomer was as airy on the inside as it was elegant on the outside. Comprising a monocoque bodyshell equipped with independent coil-sprung front suspension, a well located live rear axle and disc brakes all round, it could be specified with a 2.4, 3.4 or 3.8-litre version of Jaguar's race-proved XK engine. The interior was quintessentially British with its sumptuous leather-covered seats, polished wood fascia and door cappings, comprehensive instrumentation and impressive row of auxiliary toggle switches. The attention to detail and build quality of the MKII were remarkable for the price - these cars punched above their weight. Launched in 1959, the MKII was superseded by the 240 and 340 in September 1967; interim models that were themselves phased out at the introduction of the XJ6 in 1968. A total of 91,222 MKIIs, 240s and 340s are thought to have been produced. Some 29,619 were equipped with the 2.4-litre engine.
'YMA 292F' is a right-hand drive MKII 2.4 that left the factory in 1967 and is understood to have had just three private owners from new. It is equipped with manual-transmission plus overdrive and rides on chrome wire wheels. According to the vendor, the sports saloon possesses "highly original" bodywork, "near faultless" Metallic Grey paintwork, an "amazing" semi-leather red interior, "beautiful" woodwork and "excellent original" roof lining, "all commensurate" with the indicated mileage of 61,000, which he believes but does not warrant to be correct. He regards the venerable XK engine as "as smooth and quiet as one of three-five years old" and feels it would be "difficult to find a more original MKII". Praise indeed, for what certainly appears to a very smart, original example. Though, as ever prospective purchasers are urged to inspect the Jaguar carefully before drawing their own conclusions.
