Making its debut for the 1967 model year, the Coronet R/T 2-Door Hardtop was equally at home on 'Road' and 'Track' - or so Dodge's marketing team argued. Visually distinguished by its badging, dummy 'hood scoop' and unique grille design (which aped that of the Charger but lacked retractable headlights), the Muscle Car was powered by Mopar's new 'wedge-head' Magnum 440ci V8 mated to three-speed Torquelite automatic transmission. Conservatively rated at 375hp and 480lbft of torque, the 'Big Block' R/T made full use of its uprated (independent torsion bar front / leaf-sprung rear) suspension, heavy-duty shock absorbers, stronger brakes and front anti-roll bar. Priced at $3,199, it was reputedly capable of sprinting from 0-60mph in 7 seconds and demolishing the quarter-mile in 15.4 seconds. Outfitted with bucket seats and a centre console, the 440 R/T's interior was pure 1960s Americana.
Finished in grey with black vinyl upholstery, this particular left-hand drive example is reportedly accompanied by an "original build sheet" which shows that it "decodes correctly as original R/T 440 2-Door Hardtop". Believed but not warranted to have covered 96,660 miles from new, the Dodge is said to have benefited from almost £6,000 worth of refurbishment work. Reputedly scarcer than its Charger equivalent, this brooding Coronet R/T 440 is offered for sale with "extensive document file", assorted bills, twelve previous MOT certificates, V5 registration document, MOT certificate valid until June 8th 2006 and historic class (free) road tax.
